About this calculator

How it works

Takt time = net available time ÷ customer demand for the same shift. The tool converts minutes to seconds, gives takt in seconds and minutes per unit, the required hourly rate (3,600 ÷ takt), and the margin between takt and your actual cycle time.

Worked example (illustrative inputs)

450 available minutes, demand of 300 units, actual cycle of 75 s. Takt = (450 × 60) ÷ 300 = 90 s per unit, or 1.5 min. Required rate = 3,600 ÷ 90 = 40 units per hour. Margin = 90 − 75 = +15 s.

How to read the result

A cycle time at or below takt means the step can keep pace with demand, and the margin is the buffer per unit. A cycle time above takt marks a bottleneck that will fall behind however well the rest of the line runs. The tool suggests line balancing, shorter changeovers or added capacity in that case.

When to use it

Use it to balance a line, size stations and staffing, and check which steps need cycle-time reduction. Recalculate whenever demand or available time changes, because takt is only valid for the period it was calculated for.

À propos de ce calculateur

Fonctionnement

Frequently asked questions

What is takt time, in plain terms?

It's the rate at which you must finish one unit to exactly meet customer demand — available working time divided by demand over that same period. If takt time is 90 seconds, you need a finished unit roughly every 90 seconds to keep up.

What's the difference between takt time, cycle time and lead time?

Takt time is the pace demand requires. Cycle time is how long your process actually takes to produce one unit. Lead time is the total elapsed time from order placement to delivery. The goal is cycle time at or below takt at every station; lead time is a separate, usually much longer, end-to-end measure.

My cycle time is well below takt — is that a problem?

Not necessarily, but a large positive margin usually means that station has spare capacity that could support other work, or that staffing or equipment there is oversized for current demand. It's worth checking whether that slack should be redeployed rather than treated as a permanent buffer.

Does available time include breaks and changeovers?

Net available time should exclude scheduled breaks, meetings, planned changeovers and known downtime — it's the actual time the line is running and able to produce, not the full shift length. Using gross shift time instead will understate takt time and set an unrealistic target.

What if customer demand varies from day to day?

Recalculate takt time for each planning period, daily or weekly, using the demand and available time for that period, since takt is only valid for the horizon it was calculated against. Many operations use an average or a peak-demand takt depending on whether they're staffing for typical or worst-case volume.
