About this calculator

How it works

You enter equipment load (kW), operating hours, electricity tariff, expected reduction (%) and grid emission factor. Baseline energy = load × hours. Saving = baseline × tariff × reduction. CO₂ avoided = kWh saved × emission factor.

Worked example (illustrative inputs)

75 kW × 6,000 h = 450,000 kWh, costing $63,000 at $0.14. A 15% reduction saves 67,500 kWh and $9,450 per year, and 27 t CO₂ at 0.40 kg/kWh.

How to read the result

The result is linear in every input, so the reduction percentage matters most. The tool also shows the ten-year figure before tariff changes.

When to use it

Use it for a first estimate of any efficiency measure. Use a measured reduction where you can, and your own grid's emission factor.

À propos de ce calculateur

Traduction (brouillon) — à relire.

Fonctionnement

Frequently asked questions

How do I estimate the expected reduction percentage?

Use vendor-published efficiency gains for the specific measure — variable-speed drives and high-efficiency motors are often quoted at 15 to 30%, LED lighting retrofits typically cut lighting load 40 to 60%. Where possible, run a short measured trial against your current baseline rather than relying only on vendor claims.

What emission factor should I use for my location?

Use the kg CO2 per kWh figure published by your utility or a national or regional energy agency for your specific grid, since it varies enormously by fuel mix — coal-heavy grids often exceed 0.7 kg/kWh while grids with a lot of hydro, nuclear or renewables can fall below 0.1.

Does this account for demand charges, or only energy charges?

No, this tool models only the per-kWh energy cost, not demand charges — the separate fee many commercial tariffs charge for peak kW draw. If your efficiency measure also reduces your peak demand, use the demand charge savings calculator alongside this one for the full picture.

Why does the tool assume constant operating hours and tariff?

It is a simplified annual estimate meant for early-stage business-case screening, not a full engineering model. Real savings will vary with seasonal operating patterns and future tariff changes — treat the output as a reasonable planning-level figure, not a guaranteed number.

Is this the same calculation ISO 50001 requires for reporting?

It follows the same baseline-versus-improved-performance logic ISO 50001 uses for an Energy Performance Indicator, but a formal ISO 50001 EnPI typically also normalizes for factors like production volume or weather. This tool is a simpler standalone estimate suitable for scoping a project before a full EnPI is built.
