About this calculator

How it works

You enter billing peak demand (kW), demand charge ($/kW per month), planned peak reduction (kW), energy rate and monthly energy saved (kWh). Demand saving = kW cut × charge × 12. Energy saving = kWh × rate × 12. The cut is capped at the peak.

Worked example (illustrative inputs)

Cutting 75 kW from a 500 kW peak at $18/kW-month: 75 × 18 = $1,350 per month, $16,200 per year. 12,000 kWh per month at $0.05 adds $7,200. Total $23,400 per year; the cut is 15% of peak.

How to read the result

Demand and energy are separate bill lines: demand bills the single highest interval in the month, so one missed peak can erase a month's demand saving. Check your tariff for ratchet clauses.

When to use it

Use it to value load shifting, staggered motor starts, storage or load shedding before investing.

Fonctionnement

Frequently asked questions

What exactly counts as my billing peak demand?

It is the single highest average kW your meter recorded over a short interval (commonly 15 or 30 minutes) at any point in the billing month, not your total energy use. You can find it on your utility bill, usually labeled kW demand or billing demand.

Why is the energy saving in this tool separate from the demand saving?

They are two different line items on most commercial bills. The demand charge is charged per kW of peak draw; the energy charge is charged per kWh consumed. This tool lets you see how much of your total saving comes from trimming the spike versus reducing overall consumption.

What is a ratchet clause and does it affect this estimate?

Some utilities set your minimum demand charge for the next several months (often up to 11) based on your highest peak in any one month. This calculator only models the current month's peak, so if your tariff has a ratchet clause, the real annual benefit of avoiding one bad peak can be larger than shown here.

How do I actually reduce my peak kW?

Common levers include staggering the startup of large motors and compressors, shifting non-critical loads outside your usual peak window, pre-cooling or using thermal/battery storage to serve the spike, and automated load-shedding that sheds non-critical equipment as you approach a new high.

What if my demand charge is bundled into a flat rate rather than shown separately?

Ask your utility or check your rate schedule — many commercial and industrial rate classes bill demand separately even if your invoice summarizes it as one number. If you genuinely have no demand charge on your tariff, this tool's demand-savings line will not apply to you.
