About this calculator

How it works

You enter cooling capacity (tons), power input (kW), operating hours and electricity rate. kW/ton = power ÷ tons. COP = tons × 3.517 ÷ kW and EER = COP × 3.412 express the same efficiency in other units. Annual cost = kW × hours × rate.

Worked example (illustrative inputs)

200 tons at 130 kW, 4,000 h, $0.12/kWh: 130 ÷ 200 = 0.65 kW/ton, COP ≈ 5.41, EER ≈ 18.5, annual cost = 130 × 4,000 × 0.12 = $62,400.

How to read the result

For kW/ton lower is better; for COP and EER higher is better. The tool rates 0.6 kW/ton or less as excellent, up to 0.85 as average and above 0.85 as poor. 0.65 is average. The figure holds only for the operating point measured.

When to use it

Use it to benchmark chillers, compare a measured point with the datasheet, or estimate what a lower kW/ton is worth in dollars. Measure tons and kW at the same moment.

Fonctionnement

Frequently asked questions

What's a good kW/ton for a chiller?

Water-cooled chillers at full load typically run 0.5-0.6 kW/ton for a well-performing unit, 0.6-0.85 kW/ton is average, and above roughly 0.85 kW/ton is inefficient. Air-cooled chillers run notably higher, often 1.0-1.4 kW/ton, so don't compare the two types directly.

Why does lower kW/ton mean higher COP and EER?

They're just different ways of expressing the same ratio of cooling output to power input. COP and EER put cooling output in the numerator (bigger is better), while kW/ton puts power input in the numerator (smaller is better) — they move in opposite directions but describe the same efficiency.

Should I use full-load or part-load data?

This calculator computes efficiency at whatever single operating point (tons and kW) you enter. Since chillers spend most of their hours running below 100% load, full-load kW/ton alone can be optimistic — for a fuller energy picture, also look at the chiller's IPLV (Integrated Part-Load Value) rating if it's available.

What drives chiller efficiency down over time?

Fouled condenser tubes, warm condenser water, refrigerant charge issues, and poor staging between multiple chillers are common culprits. Keeping condenser water cold and tubes clean, and running chillers near their efficient operating range rather than heavily overloaded or underloaded, are the biggest practical levers.

Can I use this to estimate savings from a chiller upgrade?

Run the calculator once with your current tons/kW and again with the prospective new chiller's rated tons/kW at the same operating point — the difference in annual energy cost is a reasonable first-pass estimate of the savings, though a full analysis should also account for part-load performance and operating hours at different loads.
