About this calculator

How it works

You enter transformer rating (kVA), connected real load (kW), power factor, secondary voltage and phase. Load kVA = kW ÷ PF. Loading = load kVA ÷ rating. Spare = rating − load kVA. Current = kVA × 1,000 ÷ (√3 × V) for three-phase, or ÷ V for single-phase.

Worked example (illustrative inputs)

1,000 kVA, 720 kW at PF 0.9, 400 V three-phase: 720 ÷ 0.9 = 800 kVA, 80% loaded, 200 kVA spare. Full-load current ≈ 1,443 A; operating current ≈ 1,155 A.

How to read the result

Below 80% is shown as healthy, 80–100% as limited headroom and above 100% as overloaded. 80% is right at the planning line. Low power factor raises kVA for the same kW, so correcting it frees capacity.

When to use it

Use it before adding load to a transformer, or to check whether power factor correction would avoid an upgrade.

Fonctionnement

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a safe transformer loading level?

Most utilities and facilities target roughly 80% or less of nameplate kVA for continuous load, leaving margin for growth, harmonics and hot ambient conditions. Brief peaks above that are usually tolerable, but sustained operation above 100% accelerates insulation aging and risks protection trips.

Why is loading measured in kVA rather than kW?

A transformer's physical limit is current, which is set by apparent power (kVA), not just real power (kW). At a power factor of 0.9, for example, 720 kW of real load already draws about 800 kVA, so power factor directly affects how full the transformer appears.

How does improving power factor affect available capacity?

Since loading is calculated from kVA, which is kW ÷ power factor, raising power factor toward 1.0 lowers the apparent load for the same real kW demand, freeing spare capacity without adding a physically bigger transformer. This is one reason power-factor correction and transformer loading are closely linked.

Does this account for harmonics or high ambient temperature?

No — this is a straightforward nameplate-rating calculation. Harmonic currents and elevated ambient temperature both reduce a transformer's effective safe loading below what the basic percentage suggests, which is part of why the 80% guideline includes that margin.

What's the difference between single-phase and three-phase in this calculator?

The full-load amps and operating current formulas differ by a factor of √3 for three-phase systems versus single-phase, reflecting how current divides across the three conductors. Selecting the correct phase configuration is essential for an accurate current result.
